I love the Fall. The turning of leaves. The colors and scents of season's change. This is my favorite time of year. A time of harvest. Pumpkins. Ornamental Corn. Goblins. Apple Pie. Stew. The smell of bread baking.

I adore the ritual of making potpourri.

My fall and winter blends will be available starting in September of 2008.  I will be offering four blends.

*** Harvest Moon Potpourri ***

***Snowy Night Potpourri***

This blend is bursting with cones, pods, fruit, berries, flowers, spices and select botanicals, scented with another of my all-time favorites.

***Pumpkins on Parade Potpourri***

This happy blend consists of putka pods, rose hips and cinnamon stick. Scented with oils of orange, cinnamon and clove.

***My Cabin Fever Winter Spice Blend***

A simple blend of cinnamon, orange peel, rose hips, cloves and star anise.

This blend sits well in a bowl. Or scatter around a candle plate for a festive look. Or place a bit in a tart burner with water. Or put a handful in a pot of simmering water. You can add sliced fruit for an added touch. Keep an eye on your tart burner and/or your simmering water. Add more water when needed. The simmered blend will keep. Pour contents in jar and store labeled in the refrigerator. Label the jar. Not for human consumption.

Fragrance your home.

Display your potpourri in bowls, buckets, baskets, candle pans or what have you. Use as a part of a festive holiday centerpiece. Scatter potpourri around a candle that is seated on a candle plate.

Extend the life of your potpourri.

Don't throw your old potpourri away! Your botanicals will last for years. If you have some old potpourri sitting around that doesn't have fragrance, purchase some fragrance oil. Fragrance oil is generally bottled with a spray or a dropper type lid. Either will work. Add a few drops or a few quick sprays and your old potpourri will be as good as new.

Recycle.

You can keep several varieties of potpourri on hand. Just because the season changes, doesn't mean the potpourri needs to be thrown out. Store botanicals in a capped jar in a dark and dry place and reuse and fragrance with the changing seasons. Best stored in non-metallic containers.

Refreshing your potpourri.

The fragrance oils are very concentrated. Use caution and wash your hands after handling. And remember that oils can ruin wood furniture finishes. So, keep your bottles off of your good furniture. I've learned the hard way, several times too.

You can use your refresher oils directly in your botanicals. A few drops will do. Or you can re-fragrance in a bag or jar and let the mixture rest and cure for a few days.

As with all fragrance and essential oils - keep away from children.

Spring and Summer Offerings

I will be offering a summer blend of moist potpourri. This blend is carefully prepared using sea salt with fresh bay pounded into the the salt. To this bay salt I add fresh picked, and slightly dried fragrant botanicals, spices and essential oils. This blend sits for several weeks to cure in a crock, hand-turned daily. This is a very old recipe. Victorian ladies made this recipe to fragrance their homes. Some of these moist blends last for decades, if kept and properly fed.

I will also be offering smelly jellies with slotted, closing lids. My homemade recipe is a hooha favorite.
